How Do Online Therapy and Psychiatry Consultations Work?

What Are the Benefits of SAMI-Aid’s Telepsychiatry and Teletherapy?

Compared to traditional psychiatry and therapy, telepsychiatry and teletherapy offer benefits such as convenience, affordability, and privacy. Telepsychiatry and teletherapy make it easy to discuss sensitive mental health-related issues from the privacy of home without having to interact with many people on the way to and from the psychiatrist’s or therapist’s office.

Online therapy offers a savings of up to 60% versus traditional therapy. Online psychiatry also offers a savings of up to 85% versus traditional psychiatry. While an in-person visit with a psychiatrist can cost upwards of $400, online psychiatry visits typically cost between $100 to $250 per visit; the initial visit typically costs far more than follow-up visits. With SAMI-Aid, however, the cost of online psychiatry has been slashed even further. Psychiatry visits through SAMI-Aid cost only $59.99, and there are no extra charges for the first visit! Most therapists typically charge between $60 and $120 per hour, although health insurance may reduce the co-pay. With SAMI-Aid, online therapy visits always cost only $59.99, and no insurance is needed!

Telehealth technology makes it convenient for very busy therapists and psychiatrists to fit more patients into their schedule. The average wait time for new patients is shortened to days rather than the weeks it would typically take to be seen by a new therapist in person. Finally, in addition to Psychiatry, SAMI-Aid provides access to a wide range of therapists with many different specialties, including Addiction Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and more. Unlike traditional therapy, SAMI-Aid allows you to choose whether to build a relationship with one provider or to find a new provider for each session, with no extra charges for being a new patient.

How Does the Process Work to Book an Online Therapy or Psychiatry Session?

Have you ever wondered how virtual therapy and psychiatry sessions work? Telehealth allows for convenient virtual face-to-face conversations. The process of booking a therapy or psychiatry appointment through SAMI-Aid consists of the following easy steps:

  1. Register a SAMI-Aid account and sign in.
  2. Click “Call a Psychiatrist”—even if you prefer to see a therapist.
  3. Answer all required questions and follow the instructions which SAMI-Aid provides.
  4. Select a psychiatrist or therapist based on their availability and your preferences.
  5. Request an appointment, then sign in to confirm when the psychiatrist or therapist replies.
  6. Sign back right before the scheduled time of your confirmed appointment.

SAMI-Aid’s psychiatrists and therapists typically have appointments available within 2 to 7 days from the time you request an appointment. For psychiatry, the first appointment will take about 50 minutes, and subsequent visits with the same psychiatrist will last about 15 minutes. For therapy, every session will last up to 50 minutes.

You can schedule recurring visits weekly, monthly, or on an as-needed basis. To book follow-up appointments with the same psychiatrist or therapist, you will have to complete the payment and scheduling processes again, then select your preferred psychiatrist or therapist from the menu. SAMI-Aid’s platform is secure and HIPAA-compliant, but you will not have to repeatedly explain your history of previous SAMI-Aid appointments to any new SAMI-Aid providers. Any SAMI-Aid psychiatrists or therapists whom you see will have access to all records of your previous SAMI-Aid visits, treatment plans established, and prescriptions issued.

What Services Do Online Therapists and Psychiatrists Offer?

Depending on their specialized licenses, certifications, and expertise, behavioral health professionals can treat a wide range of issues. Therapists and counselors typically have expertise in talk therapy, spend significant time connecting with each patient on a personal level, and develop treatment plans involving various aspects of a patient’s well-being. Therapists and counselors cannot write prescriptions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can write prescriptions for behavioral health-related issues, but may spend less time with patients and often have less expertise in talk therapy or other aspects of psychology.

What Issues Can Online Psychiatrists Treat?

Here are the issues most commonly treated by SAMI-Aid therapists and psychiatrists, starting with the most common:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • ADHD
  • Trauma and abuse
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Lacking motivation and confidence
  • Grief and loss
  • Addictions
  • Relationship issues
  • Family conflicts
  • Intimacy-related issues
  • Career difficulties
  • Anger management

The overwhelming majority of SAMI-Aid’s behavioral health patients seek treatment for one of the top four issues listed above: Stress and Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, or ADHD. Treatment for each of these ailments is often associated with prescription medications. Accordingly, most SAMI-Aid patients who seek behavioral health treatment choose to see a psychiatrist rather than a therapist. Although a particular prescription is never guaranteed for every visit, psychiatrists can issue a variety of medications at their discretion through telehealth software such as SAMI-Aid's website and mobile app.

Common medications which have been prescribed by SAMI-Aid psychiatrists include:

  • Seroquel
  • Propranolol
  • Trazodone
  • Prozac
  • Lamotrigine
  • Wellbutrin xl
  • Bupropion hcl
  • Lexapro
  • Strattera
  • Paxil

Common medications which SAMI-Aid psychiatrists will not prescribe include:

  • DEA-controlled substances (e.g. Adderall)
  • Non-therapeutic medications (e.g. Viagra, weight loss drugs)
  • Certain other drugs with a potential for abuse (e.g. Gabapentin)
